Watching My Parents Be Grandparents

I was fortunate enough to grow up with four grandparents that loved me unconditionally and showed me what it was like to have the absolute most amazing grandparents on earth. I’m so blessed that my three babies are getting to experience this too. We are so blessed to have two sets of parents who love our kids to the fullest. Something that has been fun for me is getting to watch my parents as grandparents. We live less than two minutes away from them so my kids are getting in lots of good grandparent time, and we treasure every second. In fact, there are some things that I hope my parents know about how important their role is in my little loves’ lives.

So Mom, Dad (…er… “Jiggy and Bops”), here are some reasons why we celebrate you! I think other grandparents might be able to relate as well.

1. Your home is their favorite place.
Not only is it a fun place to run wild with their cousins, jump off the furniture and track mud through the house while hightailing it to the candy drawer, but they never get in trouble for running wild, jumping off the furniture or tracking mud through the house. As for the candy drawer, you always make sure it is fully stocked. There are no rules at Bops and Jiggy’s. And, sometimes that is ok.

2. You are proof that there are people in this world that always know how to make you feel special.
Whether it be kissing a scraped knee, pulling them into your lap for a cuddle session or showing up at every T-ball game, school program or dance recital, you are always there to show you care. You are always there to show how proud you are of them. You are always there to make them feel so loved, and for that, we are so blessed.

3. You always have time.
Time to tell a story. Time for an unannounced visit. Time for a swing pushing marathon in the backyard. Even when the rest of the world is in a hurry, including their dad and me, you always take the time to show you care. You are never too busy for your grandkids.

4. A sleepover at your house is right up there with a trip to Disney World or eating only ice cream for every meal.
It’s that good. There is nothing my little munchkins would rather do than get to stay all night and have a sleepover. Maybe it’s the fact that they get to stay up late. Maybe it’s the fact that they know they’ll get donuts for breakfast in the morning. But, I really think it’s the fact that they just love being with you. And, it’s pretty exciting for their daddy and me too. Can you say sleep? Yeah. That’s the only time we get any.

5. You spoil them rotten.
All those rules about trying to keep them grounded and not give in when they ask for one more cookie or one more episode of Paw Patrol all go out the window when they are in your care. And speaking of Paw Patrol, you know it’s ok if my kids don’t have every single Paw Patrol toy ever invented, right? You know that right? Just checking. In other words, if you bring them one more toy just because it’s a day that ends in “y,” I am going to have to add another room on to our house and I’ll send you the bill!

6.  You taught me what it looks like to be an amazing parent.
Before you were thrown into this grandparenting gig, you were parents. Because of you, I grew up in a household full of love and support. I also grew up in a household where the parents took great care, paid attention and took the time to play and do fun things with their kids. I want my kids to grow up the same way and always know that they are loved and that they can do anything they set their minds to. I want them to grow into the beautiful little people that they are supposed to and I want you to be there to watch. Because watching you watching them is one of my favorite things in this life.

We are so lucky that you are ours. You put the grand in grandparents.
